Launching the Community

A new way for DevOps folks to connect

I'm delighted to announce that as of today the Community is up and running in the DevopsTrain project. Details follow.

What is it?

It's a way to ask a question and answer one, and to discuss topics that matter in DevOps in a mailing list format — that is, a classic mailing list. Our numbers grow every day, but until now members hadn't felt that. Let's connect!

How does it work?

All you need to do to ask a question is send an email to ask@lifeisfile.com, and it will then reach every subscribed member. To answer a question, simply reply to the email you received, and your reply will likewise reach every member. Be sure to keep the conversation history and quoting intact so it's clear what the answer refers to.

How do I subscribe?

By default, everyone who has registered on the DevopsTrain platform is subscribed. If you're not interested in taking part in the community, every email contains a link where you can set the difficulty level of questions, as well as unsubscribe completely.

What do we discuss?

Anything from technical questions to any other topics related to DevOps. Here are some examples of email subjects that are welcome:

  • How do I add authentication to an application?
  • My pod won't start, help
  • How long does it take to learn k8s?
  • Where is the best place to store an application's secrets?
  • What skills do I need to work confidently in Yandex.Cloud?

Why email and not a Telegram group?

This format has been the standard in the development world for many years. Honestly, nothing better has been invented yet. Email doesn't let you phrase questions and thoughts in a single line, as so often happens in messengers. Instead, before sending an email you need to carefully formulate your question and provide all the necessary details so that others can help you without having to ask a lot of follow-up questions. There's nothing wrong with follow-ups, though — I trust that our community is friendly and you'll definitely get help. As we know, a well-posed question is already half the answer.

Another reason is the optimal balance between visibility and intrusiveness. You ask a question and don't expect an instant answer, while members aren't distracted from their current work to check a chat. At the same time, your email sits there and waits its turn — comfortable for everyone.
