Myths About DevOps

Myths about DevOps

๐Ÿ‘ป DevOps is just a sysadmin with a bigger salary

No. A DevOps engineer has sysadmin skills, but a sysadmin usually has a few things to brush up on in order to become a DevOps engineer.

๐Ÿ‘ป DevOps is about tools.

No. DevOps isn't even a person โ€” it's an approach. Although a DevOps engineer is very much a person who puts the paradigm into practice and helps the rest of the team follow this methodology.

๐Ÿ‘ป A DevOps engineer absolutely must know how to program

No. For a junior level it isn't mandatory, though it's a big plus. For a senior, yes, it's a must.

๐Ÿ‘ป If DevOps practices worked at one company, they'll work at any other

No, that's not true. Processes need to be tailored to each individual company or team.

๐Ÿ‘ป DevOps is CI/CD

Of course not โ€” it's far more complex and far broader than that.

๐Ÿ‘ป A company can't function without DevOps engineers

It can, but only up to a certain point. Although for some companies, even well-known ones, that point hasn't arrived yet =)

๐Ÿ‘ป DevOps is the answer to all of a company's problems

No. It won't help if the company isn't in the habit of changing things to improve efficiency, or if there are other approaches in place that are incompatible with it.

๐Ÿ‘ป DevOps is only for big companies

No. Even at small companies, DevOps practices can make release and development processes simpler, more frequent, and more transparent, which reduces the time it takes to deliver updates to end users.
